Subject

Washington, George, 1732-1799, Freemasonry - United States

Description

It is believed that many Founding Fathers including George Washington were Masons. The painting, by Hattie E. Burdette, was produced for the George Washington Bicentennial Commission in 1932. Lithograph copies on canvas were distributed to lodges across the United States. Washington is wearing a white satin apron. The apron is known as the unique badge of a Mason. It is thought that Marquis de Lafayette's wife embroidered Washington's apron, and Lafayette presented the gift to him as an emblem of their strong bond and friendship.
