A plate with the Masonic square and compasses symbol which surrounds the letter "G". The compasses and the square are the most recognizable tools of the trade. Ancient stonemasons used them to create 90-degree angles and test the accuracy of their stones.The exact time when the letter "G" became part of the Masonic square and compasses symbol is unknown, but it is between 1730 and 1768 in the United States.
