Title

Two Pillars with Stairs

Subject

Freemasonry in arts, Trompe l'oeil painting

Description

The two pillars are a reference to the entrance to King Solomon’s temple in the Bible. In Freemasonry, the two pillars symbolize strength and establishment. The winding stairs symbolize the internal path to heaven. It’s an allegory for a member’s progress from Entered Apprentice to Fellow Craft. The balls on top of the pillars represent Earth, both the land and the celestial planet.
